Hikawa Town in Yatsushiro County, Kumamoto Prefecture, is located 30km from Kumamoto City, the prefecture's capital. The Hikawa River flows through the town's center and is the region's main water source. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom across the plains, and the cherry blossom is designated the town's flower. Hikawa Town is also well-known as the birthplace of pears. These pears have a long history dating back over 100 years and are a specialty product that is said to have been presented to the Emperor. The Yoshino pear brand is now well-known not only in Kumamoto Prefecture but throughout the country. A major tourist attraction is the Nozu Kofun Group. Numerous ruins have been excavated here, making it an essential place to learn about the past.
