Yamaga City is located in northern Kumamoto Prefecture, and was formed in 2005 when the former Yamaga City and four towns merged. The northern part of the city is covered with valleys and forests. The central plains of the Kikuchi River basin also feature beautiful countryside. Yamaga City is home to six hot springs: Yamaga Onsen, Hirayama Onsen, Kahoku Onsen, Kumai Onsen, Kamoto Onsen, and Kikuka Onsen. Collectively known as the Six Hot Springs, these are bustling hot springs. Another popular tourist spot is the Yachiyoza Theater, a theater built in 1910 that is now designated an Important Cultural Property. Retaining the traditional theater style, the theater still hosts not only Kabuki but also plays and concerts.
