Nankan Town, Tamana District, Kumamoto Prefecture, is located in the northwestern part of the prefecture, bordering Tamana City and Fukuoka Prefecture. The town is rich in nature, with mountains like Mt. Kodai and Mt. Otsuyama and rivers like the Sekigawa River. Public roads and expressways make it easy to travel by car. The Buzen Kaido road once passed through the town, and the remains of a teahouse, where people are said to have rested during their alternate attendance journeys, remain. Local specialties include Nankan somen noodles and Nankan age (fried tofu). Events include the Sekisho Festival in November, where visitors can purchase and enjoy fresh local vegetables and newly harvested rice, and the Yanaka Summer Festival in August, where people pray for good health, prosperity in business, and bountiful harvests. Tourist attractions include Otsuyama Park and Otsuya Aso Shrine.
