About Tamato Town
Tamato Town, Tamana District, Kumamoto Prefecture, is located in the northwestern part of the prefecture, bordering Kumamoto City and Yamaga City. It is rich in nature and convenient for commuting to work and school thanks to the JR Kagoshima Main Line and National Route 208. The town's tree is the ginkgo, its flower is the mandarin orange, and its bird is the Japanese bush warbler. It became a town in 1967, and has undergone mergers and border changes to this day. The town's specialties include mandarin oranges, sweet potatoes (Beni-Azuma), and watermelon. Local events include the Fureai Festival in the summer and the Yamakita Hachiman Shrine Spring and Autumn Festivals in the fall and winter. Tourist attractions include Yoshiji Park, with its expansive natural scenery, and the sacred spring of Tono, home to a large tree over 300 years old.
