Minamata City is an industrial city located at the mouth of the Minamata River at the southern tip of Kumamoto Prefecture. The Shiranui Sea, also known as Japan's Mediterranean Sea, boasts beautiful natural scenery. Drawing on its past experience of the pollution known as Minamata disease, the city is proactively addressing environmental issues. As a result, the city is now a nationally recognized environmental model city and was awarded the title of Japan's Environmental Capital in the Environmental Capital Contest. Yunoko Onsen and Yunotsuru Onsen are well-known tourist spots, and the city's local seafood dishes are renowned for being affordable and delicious. Local specialties include goby and dekopon, and the city hosts festivals and events such as the Koiryu Festival and the Minamata Mirai Concert, attracting many tourists.
