Minami Ward, Kumamoto City, is located in the southern part of the city. First-class rivers, such as the Kase River and Midorikawa River, flow east to west through the ward, and the ward is rich in nature, with parks and green spaces such as Karakai Park and Tsukahara Kofun Park. More than half of the ward is farmland. Rice, wheat, eggplant, and tomatoes are cultivated on these farms. The ward is also blessed with abundant fishing resources, including seaweed, clams, and mussels. It also boasts many historical heritage sites, such as the remains of the Kumamoto Domain Kawajiri rice storehouse and the Romon gate of Rokuden Shrine. Urban development is underway that makes use of these resources. An industrial park supporting the city's manufacturing and transportation cores is also being formed within the ward, and plans are underway to build a new JR station and a smart change facility.
