Yamae Village, Kuma District, is located in the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, and is known for its specialty products, including chestnuts, wasabi, trout, and pickled plums. Surrounded by idyllic rural scenery, Yamae Onsen Hotaru, a hot spring inn, is popular with day-trippers. The local cuisine, made with Yamae Village's specialties, is also popular. Maruoka Park offers a spectacular view of the Hitoyoshi Kuma Basin. In spring, approximately 50,000 azaleas bloom, and an azalea festival is held. The Murayakuba Station of the Era, a nationally registered tangible cultural property, was renovated from the former village hall. The restaurant on the first floor serves dishes made with local ingredients. There are also many historical tourist sites, such as Yamada Daio Shrine, Takadera Temple, and Ishigura.
