Minamikyushu City is located in the southern part of the Satsuma Peninsula. It borders Kagoshima City, Makurazaki City, Ibusuki City, and Minamisatsuma City. It is located approximately 30 km southwest of downtown Kagoshima. The Sorayoi festival is held in some settlements of the former Chiran Town. This traditional event involves boys donning headdresses made from straw and stomping their feet while chanting "Sora-yoi, Sorayoi!" It is held to express gratitude to the moon and sun for the harvest. As a full-fifteenth-night event in southern Satsuma, it has been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property. Tourist attractions include the Chiran Samurai Residences, Chiran Special Attack Peace Hall, Kamagata Shrine, and Banshohana Park. Other events held here include the Chiran Nebuta Festival, Kawabe Gion Festival, and Little Kyoto Hometown Festival.
