Kimotsuki Town, Kimotsuki District, is located in the southeastern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, on the eastern side of the Osumi Peninsula. It was formed in 2005 through the merger of Uchinoura Town and Takayama Town. Neighboring Kanoya City, Higashikushira Town, Kinko Town, and Minamiosumi Town are the towns of Kunimiyama and Kanatake, and the Kimotsuki River flows through the town. Tourist attractions include the Nikaido Family Residence, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property; Takayama Castle Ruins and Tsukasaki Kofun Group, nationally designated Historic Sites; and Todoroki Falls. The town is also home to the Uchinoura Space Center, a rocket launch facility. A rocket launch site located in a mountainous area is rare worldwide. Festivals include the Yabusame Festival in October and the Uchinoura Galaxy Marathon, held in November to commemorate the founding of the Galactic Federation Uchinoura Republic. The town's tree is the camphor tree, and its flower is the chrysanthemum.
