About Izumi City
Izumi City is a relatively new city, established in 2006 through a merger, located in the northwestern part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It is a rural town with agriculture, forestry, and fisheries as its core industries. It is also famous as the birthplace of the Satsuma Shimazu clan. Izumi City originally served as a key land transportation hub, with National Route 3 and the Kagoshima Main Line serving as key transportation hubs. However, as its residential area gradually expands, the number of students commuting to Kagoshima City is on the rise. Mandarin oranges are a well-known specialty, along with broad beans and snap peas. Izumi City is also known as one of Japan's leading migratory areas for birds, known as Tsuruno, and is designated a national special natural monument. Other notable attractions include Hakozaki Hachiman Shrine and Izumi Foothills, an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
