About Aira City
Aira City was established in 2010 through the merger of Aira Town, Kajiki Town, and Gamo Town. It borders Kagoshima City, Satsumasendai City, and Kirishima City. It is a thriving commuter town for Kagoshima City. Tourist attractions include Ryumon Falls, one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls; Shiraginzaka, designated a historic national highway; and Ryumonjizaka, designated a national historic site. Leisure spots include Sumiyoshi Pond, which features a park and campground, and Aira City General Athletic Park, which features a baseball field and tennis courts. The traditional Kajiki Spider Battle is held in June, and the Aira Jumbo Onibi Fire Festival is held in January. The Kajiki Spider Battle pits orb spiders against each other. Local specialties include painted, unglazed clay dolls, Kajiki manju, and Gamo black tea.
