About Yamada Town
Yamada Town, Shimohei District, is located in the center of the Sanriku Coast, and Yamada Bay is home to the uninhabited island of "Oranda Island." It was named after Dutch ships that used it to replenish their water and food supplies in the 1600s. Also, south of the Funakoshi Peninsula is Tabu no Oshima, a natural habitat for the thunbergia thunbergii. The town boasts numerous natural sites known as the Yamada Eight Views, including Okamazaki, Akabira Kongo, and Myojinzaki. The Funakoshi Family Travel Village holds a cherry blossom festival in April, and the Yamada Hachiman Shrine Shinko Festival and Osugi Shrine Shinko Festival are held in September. Yamada Town, Shimohei District, suffered extensive damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake, but various efforts are underway to rebuild the town, including the Yamada Ganbatteshi Reconstruction Festival.
