Tanohata Village in Shimohei District faces the Pacific Ocean and is a thriving fishing village. Luxury produce such as abalone and sea urchin, as well as wakame seaweed, are abundantly harvested here. Matsutake mushrooms are also harvested as a mountain delicacy. Dairy farming is also thriving here, with dairy products such as milk and ice cream being among the local specialties. One tourist attraction is the observation deck at Kitayamazaki Park, from which visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of Japan's most beautiful coastline. Other popular sights include Unosu Cliff Park, known for its beautiful scenery. The Sugakubo Deer Dance and Omiya Kagura dance are registered as prefectural intangible folk cultural properties. The village is actively involved in preserving and passing on these local performing arts.
