About Ofunato City
Ofunato City, located in the southern part of Iwate Prefecture, is one of the representative cities of the southern Sanriku Coast. The city area forms a typical ria coastline. The main industry is fishing, and the coastal area offshore from the city is located in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, known as one of the world's three largest fishing grounds. Ofunato Port is the largest and most important port in Iwate Prefecture, and has an international shipping route to Busan, South Korea. The city's climate is characterized by cool summers due to the influx of ocean breezes, and relatively warm winters for the Tohoku region. Among the city's cultural assets, Yoshihama Suneka has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and Goishi Coast has been designated a nationally designated place of scenic beauty.
