About Miyako City
Miyako City is located on the Sanriku Coast of Iwate Prefecture, at the easternmost tip of Honshu. It is the largest municipality in Iwate Prefecture, but 80% of the city is covered by mountains and forests, with the population densely concentrated on the remaining flat land. The Omo Peninsula, which surrounds the city, forms Miyako Bay. It is said to have been opened as an outer port for the Morioka domain by Toshinao Nanbu, the lord of Morioka Domain. During the Edo period, shipping between the Tohoku region and Edo (present-day Tokyo) flourished, and the city became a base for exporting goods to Edo, developing into one of Oshu's leading commercial ports. Fishing has long been the city's main industry, with specialty products such as salmon, salmon roe, sea urchin, and abalone. The city boasts some of the highest catches of salmon, saury, and walleye pollock in the country.
