Sumita Town in Kesen District is a lush green town surrounded by mountains. With 90% of the town covered in forest, forestry is a thriving industry. Many temporary housing units were constructed using Kesen cedar during the reconstruction work following the Great East Japan Earthquake. Many anglers flock to the Kesen River for char and sweetfish. Goyo Mountain in Iwate Prefectural Natural Park is home to wildlife such as monkeys, deer, and serows, and also offers hiking trails.
