Kahoku City has a history of developing as a post town during the Edo period. Mount Hodatsu is located within the city, with an elevation of 637.1 meters. While the city boasts a thriving textile industry, it also produces grapes and other vegetables. The city's sand dunes are utilized to cultivate fruits and vegetables. In addition to grapes and other vegetables, other local specialties include Japanese yams and sweet potatoes. Famous sites include Hachiman Shrine and the Nishida Kitaro Memorial Museum of Philosophy. The city is bordered by three municipalities: Tsubata Town, Uchinada Town, and Hodatsushimizu Town. The city's tree is the cherry blossom, its flower is the rose rugosa, and its bird is the snowy plover.
