In 2006, the city of Omitama was formed through a merger of the various municipalities, named after them. Located in the center of Ibaraki Prefecture, Omitama City is flat and has a strong agricultural base, thriving with the cultivation of chives and strawberries. In addition to agricultural products, other famous delicacies include nira senbei (sweet rice crackers) and Omitama pudding, which are made from local specialties. The region has a deep connection with natto, and is home to the Takano Foods Natto Museum and the Takano Foods Mito Factory, where you can learn about the history of natto. The city is also home to Ibaraki Airport, which is an excellent location with easy access to central Tokyo, with only an hour and a half away.
