About Shumukappu Village
Located in the southernmost part of the Kamikawa Regional Bureau, Shimukappu Village in Yufutsu District is surrounded by mountains. Over 90% of the village is covered by forest, and it is connected to Obihiro and Sapporo by national highways and expressways. The mountains surrounding the village include Mount Tomamu and Mount Piyashiri, and the Mukawa River flows through the village. The village's name is said to come from the Ainu word "shi-mukapu," meaning "main stream of the Mukawa River." The summer climate is pleasant, with many sunny days and no rainy season or typhoons. Historically, the village developed primarily around agriculture, forestry, and dairy farming, and today, wild vegetables are a specialty. Major tourist attractions include the Horoka Tomamu Forest and Niniu Natural Land, both designated biodiversity and nature reserves.
