Mukawa Town in Yufutsu District is a major producer of melons. It is known for its brand variety, Hobetsu Melon, and the original species of Hobetsu Melon is the IK Melon. Mukawa Town in Yufutsu District also produces a wide variety of rice and vegetables, and is known for its dairy and beef cattle production. The town is home to two hot springs, Mukawa Onsen and Jukai Onsen, which are popular tourist spots. Many famous skaters have come from the town, including Maki Tabata, who won a silver medal at the Vancouver Olympics. Akira Suzuki, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, is also from the town.
