Saroma Town in Tokoro District is known for its thriving pumpkin production, and the town hosts events related to the pumpkin. The town's name comes from the Ainu word "Saromapet," which means "river in the reed beds." Fishing is thriving in the area around Lake Saroma within the town limits. Scallop and oyster farming are particularly well-known nationwide. Field crops and forestry are also thriving in the hilly areas. Tourist attractions in the town include Abashiri Quasi-National Park and Lake Saroma Hot Springs. Popular town events include the Lake Saroma 100km Marathon and the Cinderella Dream Festival, the latter of which is one of the pumpkin-related events mentioned at the beginning of this article.
