Mashike Town in Mashike District, known for its top botan shrimp catch in Japan, has a rich fishing history. It once thrived on herring fishing. Even today, in addition to botan shrimp, amaebi shrimp and octopus are also caught in large quantities. The town is also lined with old, retro buildings designated as Hokkaido Heritage Sites, creating a townscape that evokes the long history of Hokkaido.
