About Wassamu Town
Wassamu Town, Kamikawa District, is located at the southern end of the Nayoro Basin, surrounded by hilly terrain. Shiokari Pass also marks the border with Pippu City. The town's name is said to have come from the Ainu word "Wasam," meaning "near the elm tree," due to the large number of elm trees that once flourished around the Rokusen River. The town's main industry is pumpkin cultivation, boasting the largest cultivated area in Japan. It is also known for producing winter cabbage. Cross-country skiing is also popular, and the town is famous for producing many top skiers. Cultural assets include the Kagura masks at Wassamu Shrine and the village separation memorial pine. Tourist attractions include Mikasayama Natural Park.
