Nakatonbetsu Town in Esashi County is known for gold dust mining in the 1890s. Nakatonbetsu Cave experiences intense winter chills, sometimes experiencing the lowest temperatures in Japan. Local specialties include cheese, thistle honey, gold dust ramen, and high-quality Soya disposable chopsticks. Nakatonbetsu Cave is a popular tourist attraction. There are six routes to Nakatonbetsu Cave, each with its own unique charm. Visitors can observe rare flora and fauna, including squirrels, rock ptarmigan, Ezo deer, salamanders, swallowtail butterflies, and long-tailed swallowtail butterflies. Other activities include gold panning on the Bechan River, hiking Mt. Tonochi and Mt. Chikoma, and mushroom hunting.
