Tsurui Village, Akan District, is the only village within the Kushiro Regional Development Bureau. Although this area is designated as a depopulated area, the average annual income of farmers is the highest in the country. As a result, it is also number one in Japan in terms of average income. While abundant nature remains, Tsurui Village, Akan District, is also seeing the development of residential developments, with land areas per household typically measured at around 660m². In recent years, many wealthy people from Honshu have been moving here. The area is also famous for the large number of red-crowned cranes that visit, and the tourism industry, which utilizes the cranes as a tourist attraction, is thriving. There are also tourist spots such as Yamazaki Forest, a forest therapy base, and the Kushiro Wetlands.
