Residential development began in Hiroshima City's Saeki Ward in the 1980s, resulting in an increase in population. Before becoming an administrative ward of Hiroshima City, the ward functioned as a commuter town for the city. Saeki Ward is bordered by the sea in the south and mountains in the north. This abundance of nature contributed to the increased demand for residential space as a commuter town. General machinery, agriculture, and dairy farming are also thriving in this area. One of the ward's specialties is mountain pufferfish, a konjac dish. The ward is also home to hot springs, which attract many tourists. One of the ward's most famous events is the Yahata River Marathon.
