Nishi Ward, Hiroshima City, is located in the southwestern part of Hiroshima City and borders the city's four other wards. With the Tenma River to the east and the Yahata River to the west, the area is blessed with abundant nature. The eastern part of the ward is developed as an urban area, while residential areas spread out to the west. Beautiful natural scenery can be seen from Mount Ochausu, attracting many hikers. This area also developed as the Saigoku Kaido (West Country Highway) in ancient times, and was ranked as an important highway second only to the Five Highways. Kusatsu Alley and Farewell Teahouse, which bear witness to this era, are well-known tourist spots. Oyster farming is thriving in the Kusatsu fishing industry, and onion cultivation is a major agricultural activity. Local specialties include mugwort mochi (mugwort rice cakes), millet mochi (millet rice cakes), and Kannon leeks (green onions).
