Numata City is located in northern Gunma Prefecture, a lush city surrounded by mountains. Home to Mount Akagi, one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains, and the Tone River, it flourished as a castle town around Numata Castle in the Middle Ages. Today, tourism is thriving, and the city also enjoys agriculture. Local specialties include woodworking, honey, and konjac. Fukiware Falls, one of Japan's 100 most famous waterfalls and a designated natural monument, is also known as the Niagara Falls of the Orient, offering spectacular views of the Lion Rock and the valley. The Numata Festival, held every August, is known as a Kanto-famous wild festival and attracts many tourists. Numata City also enjoys snowfall in the winter, making it a great place to enjoy winter sports.
