About Kanra Town
Kanra Town, Kanra District, is located in the southwestern part of Gunma Prefecture. Its origins date back to the Paleolithic period, as archaeological remains and ruins dating back to that time have been identified. From the Nanboku-cho period onward, the area became important as one of the bases of western Gunma, with castles being built throughout. The town is also home to Rakuzan-en Garden, a nationally designated scenic spot. Attached to the residence of the Obata Domain, which held 20,000 koku of rice, it is the prefecture's only feudal lord's garden. Created by the Oda clan in the early Edo period, it is a strolling garden with a pond and a strolling landscape. A pond with landscape stones is surrounded by an island and artificial hills, creating an undulating landscape. Several teahouses are located around the garden, creating a garden with a rich historical and cultural value.
