About Kusatsu Town
Kusatsu Town, Agatsuma District, is located in the northwestern part of Gunma Prefecture, in a highland basin at an elevation of 1,130 to 1,260 meters. Its climate is subarctic and humid. The town's name comes from "kusamizu" (kusamizu) or "kusozu," referring to Kusatsu Hot Springs, which have a strong sulfur smell. Kusatsu Hot Springs has also established itself as a therapeutic hot spring resort for leprosy patients and has been bustling since the Sengoku period. Kusatsu Hot Springs is nationally renowned as one of Japan's three most famous hot springs. Kusatsu's waters are also one of Japan's most acidic, with a pH of 2.1, providing antibacterial properties. The Yubatake, the symbol of Kusatsu Hot Springs, gushes out 4,000 liters of hot spring water per minute, constantly billowing with steam.
