About Higashiagatsuma Town

Higashi-Azuma Town, Agatsuma District, is located in the northwestern part of Gunma Prefecture, surrounded by mountain ranges such as Mt. Iwabitsu and Mt. Asamagakure. It is a relatively new town formed in 2006 through the merger of one town and one village. The town's main industries are agriculture and tourism, with konjac, daffodils, and myoga (Japanese ginger) as its main agricultural products. Tourism-related activities include hot springs throughout the town, such as Kawanaka Onsen, Matsunoyu Onsen, Asamagakure Onsenkyo, and Azuma Onsen. The town also has partnerships with the former Ryujin Village in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, and the former Hikawa Town in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, as the municipalities home to Japan's Three Most Beautiful Hot Springs. Other tourist attractions include the Tarusawa Tunnel, known as Japan's shortest tunnel; Iwabitsu Castle; the Kamigo Okahara Ruins; and the Gohara Ruins, which became a hot topic due to the discovery of a heart-shaped clay figurine.
