Shirakawa Village in Ono District, Gifu Prefecture, borders Ishikawa Prefecture across the Hakusan mountain range and is connected to Toyama Prefecture. Surrounded by mountains, more than 90% of the village's area is forest. The area is filled with idyllic, traditional scenery and is roughly divided into two areas: a hot spring resort and a World Heritage Site. In the Hirase Hot Springs area, you can experience the majestic nature and tour the beech forests and lakes. The World Heritage Site is dotted with historically significant buildings and many gassho-style houses, which are rarely seen these days. Traditional crafts are a major specialty. Handmade straw crafts, ornaments, and everyday items are all made here and there.
