Shirakawa Town in Kamo District, Gifu Prefecture, has a large area, most of which is mountain forest. The town's settlements are small, due to the dramatic elevation changes and limited flat land. The Hida River is the town's main water source, with many other rivers flowing around it. The inland climate means cold winters, but the lack of snow makes it extremely comfortable. The town is active in agriculture, taking advantage of its natural environment, with Shirakawa tea being the main crop. Tomato production is also thriving, taking advantage of the mountainous terrain. Cypress trees, rock azaleas, Japanese bush warblers, and ameji trees are symbols of the region. Because of its lush greenery, green is the town's symbolic color.
