About Soma City
Soma City is located in the northern part of Fukushima Prefecture's Hamadori region, facing the Pacific Ocean. To the west are the Abukuma Plateau, the Soma Hills, and mountains such as Mt. Reizan. It once flourished as a castle town of the Nakamura Domain, which had a fiefdom of 60,000 koku. It is now part of the Sendai metropolitan area and serves as a commuter town for Sendai City. Despite being located in the Tohoku region, the city enjoys a very comfortable climate, with little snowfall, cool summer temperatures, and relatively warm winters. The city's main industry is agriculture, with strawberries being a specialty. The Soma Core Industrial Park is a thriving manufacturing area, and the Matsukawaura Fishing Port is a popular fishing destination. Major tourist attractions include the Soma Shrine and Nakamura Castle ruins, both designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
