Iwaki City, located in the southeastern part of Fukushima Prefecture, boasts a 60-km coastline facing the Pacific Ocean. It also boasts 10 beaches and 11 ports. The city is divided by the mountainous Abukuma Highlands to the west and hilly terrain to the east. The city boasts the longest annual sunshine hours in the Tohoku region, the highest average daily temperature, and a comfortable climate, with summers that rarely get too hot and winters that rarely get too cold. The city once prospered due to the location of the Joban Coalfield, Honshu's largest coal mine. However, due to its proximity to the Tokyo metropolitan area, its core industries have gradually shifted to manufacturing and tourism.
