About Aizuwakamatsu City
Aizuwakamatsu City is located in the Aizu region in western Fukushima Prefecture, in the southeastern part of the Aizu Basin. Urban, commercial, and residential areas are spread out to the north, west, and center of the city, with the Aga River flowing from south to north and Lake Inawashiro to the east. The construction of Tsuruga Castle led to the development of the castle town, laying the foundation for the growth of the Aizu domain during the Edo period and thriving as the castle town of the Aizu domain. Even today, Tsuruga Castle and the Byakkotai are utilized as tourist attractions and are famous nationwide. Many tourists also visit the city for the traditional Akabeko craft and the cultural distinctive Kozuyu. Other famous products include Aizu-nuri lacquerware, sake, picture candles, and Okiagari Koboshi dolls.
