About Onga Town
Onga Town, Onga District, is located downstream of the Tono River, roughly halfway between Kitakyushu City and Fukuoka City. While it has developed as a commuter town, agriculture thrives, taking advantage of the region's abundant natural environment, with rice, butterbur, strawberries, and other crops cultivated. This region has a long history of agricultural culture, and numerous ruins dating back 20,000 years have been excavated. The Maruyama Kofun Group is now maintained as Shimazu Maruyama Historical and Natural Park, a popular tourist attraction. Rare insects and wild birds can also be observed in the park. Artifacts excavated from the Keinoura and Ozaki-Tenjin ruins can be seen at the Fureai no Sato Ethnological Museum. Every May, the Onga Regatta is held at the General Athletic Park, creating a lively atmosphere.
