Ashiya Town, Onga District, Fukuoka Prefecture, is located in the northern part of the prefecture. It has close ties with neighboring Kitakyushu City to the east, and recently, the town has been developing into a residential area for Kitakyushu City on the east bank of the Onga River. Its main industries are fishing and commerce, and squid landed at Ashiya's fishing port are sold under the name "Ashiyanika." Tourist attractions in Ashiya Town, Onga District, include the rare 40-year-old "nanjamonja" flower at Okaminato Shrine. Specialties include fresh seafood such as sea bream and yellowtail caught in the ocean, and at the live fish center "Umi no Eki," you can have fish swimming in the fish tanks cooked on the spot. The town is also proud of its popular folk crafts, such as the Hassaku horse made from straw.
