Kurume City is located in the southwestern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, approximately 40 km from Fukuoka City. The Chikugo River flows through the city, and Mount Mino and Mount Takara tower above. Local specialties include Kurume ramen and Kurume beer. The city boasts numerous natural attractions, including the 1.1 km long Yanagisaka Sone avenue of Japanese laurel trees, designated a prefectural natural monument, where the Yanagisaka Hazel Festival is held in early winter. Senkoji Temple, home to 5,000 blooming hydrangeas, is also known as the Hydrangea Temple. Kurume City is also home to the main shrine of Suitengu Shrine, known as the god of safe childbirth, and the Suitengu Shrine Summer Festival is held in the summer. Tanushimaru Hirahara Kofun Park, a forest park located 300 meters above sea level, offers a panoramic view of the Chikushi Plain.
