Yahatahigashi Ward, Kitakyushu City, is one of the administrative districts that make up Kitakyushu City, and has long prospered as a town thanks to its steel industry. It is a town rich in history and culture, with many designated cultural properties, including the former Moji Mitsui Club Main Building and Minamikawachi Bridge, both of which are nationally designated cultural properties. There are also many other city-designated historic sites, such as the Shigetome Ruins, Mori Ogai's former residence, and the Ipponmatsuzuka Tomb. Senbutsu Cave, Hiraodai, and the large petrified wood of Yomiya are nationally designated natural monuments. Several Yahata Steel Works-related facilities are candidates for World Heritage status, and the entire ward is working to achieve this. There are also several Gion festivals and Bon Odori dances, which are popular and well-attended, creating a lively atmosphere.
