About Wakamatsu Ward, Kitakyushu City
Wakamatsu Ward, Kitakyushu City, is one of the administrative wards that make up Kitakyushu City. It is located in the northwestern part of the city, and in the northeastern part, the Hibiki Container Terminal has been developed through large-scale land reclamation. Major tourist attractions include the Wakato Bridge and Wakamatsu Band, a stretch of coastline from the bridge to Wakamatsu Station, where old buildings such as the former Furukawa Mining Wakamatsu Building and the former Gonzo hut remain. Wakamatsu Ward developed long ago as a shipping port for coal produced in the Chikuho coalfields. Currently, the Kitakyushu Academic Research Park Development Project is underway. Furthermore, as Wakamatsu Ward is a windy area, a large wind power generation facility is located here, and Japan's first demonstration research on offshore wind power generation is being conducted there.
