Tobata Ward, Kitakyushu City, is one of the administrative districts that make up Kitakyushu City and is located in the center of the city. The northern part faces Dokai Bay, and the northeastern part faces the Kanmon Strait. Historically, burial goods such as human bones and pottery dating back 1,400 years have been discovered in the Nagoyazaki and Makiyama Kofun burial mounds. Industrial development began with the founding of the Yawata Steel Works. Major tourist attractions include the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art, the Former Matsumoto Family Residence, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, and Miyakojima Observatory Park, famous for its cherry blossoms. Festivals such as the Tobata Gion Oyamakasa and Kukinoumi Fireworks Festival, nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties, are also held here, attracting many visitors.
