About Shime Town
Shime Town, Kasuya District, is located in the eastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. It borders Fukuoka City, Kasuya Town, Sue Town, and Umi Town. Previously, the town had a coal mine and was a thriving coal mining town. However, in the aftermath of the energy revolution, the coal mines disappeared with the closure of the last remaining coal mine, the Shime Coal Mine of the Japan National Railways. Currently, the town is thriving as a commuter town, thanks to relatively low land prices and its proximity to Fukuoka City. Tourist attractions in Shime Town, Kasuya District, include the Tanabataike Tomb, a national historic site; the Shime Mine; and Shime Town Railway Park, a greenway along the former Katsuta Line where cherry blossoms, the town's tree, bloom. Other attractions include the Kan'o 3 Sanskrit stone monument, a prefectural cultural property. In September, a stone-throwing sumo tournament is held.
