Sawara Ward in Fukuoka City is bordered by Chuo Ward, Nishi Ward, Minami Ward, and Jonan Ward. When Fukuoka City was designated as a city by government ordinance in 1972, it was called Nishi Ward. However, in 1982, Nishi Ward was reclassified into Sawara Ward, Jonan Ward, and Nishi Ward, forming the new ward. The area stretches north to south, making it the largest area in Fukuoka City, with the Hii River and Muromi River flowing through it.
