Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City, is one of the administrative wards that make up Fukuoka City and serves as a commuter town for the city. The city is characterized by rapid change, with many redevelopment projects taking place. The Hakozaki area in the southern part of the ward retains its old townscape and is home to Hakozaki Shrine, a former Kanpeitaisha shrine, making it a popular tourist spot. The Kashii area in the center of the ward is a developed commercial district and is the central area of Higashi Ward. It is also home to Kashii Shrine, a Kanpeitaisha shrine. Shikanoshima Island is connected to the mainland by a sandbar, and Shikanoumijinja Shrine is the head shrine of the Nishikitsumi Shrines, which enshrine the Nishikitsumi Three Gods. It is the shrine where the Kagura dance of the national anthem, Kimigayo, is dedicated. Between Kashiihama and Uminonakamichi is a reclaimed land known as Island City.
