Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is located in the central-southern part of the prefecture. Known for its triple waterwheels on the north bank of the Chikugo River, this idyllic garden city boasts a rich natural environment, producing a variety of local specialties, including the rare freshwater seaweed, A. sacchariflorus, persimmons, pears, and other fruits, as well as the Hakata all-purpose leek. Asakura City's tourist attractions include the Akizuki Castle Main Gate and Nagayamon Gate, both designated tangible cultural properties of Fukuoka Prefecture, and the Oda Chausuzuka Kofun, a nationally designated historic site. In May, the Chikugo River Cormorant Fishing event, in which cormorants dive into the river and catch fish, attracts many spectators every year. This cormorant fishing has a long history, apparently even mentioned in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki.
