About Wakasa Town
Wakasa Town, Mikata-Kaminaka District, Fukui Prefecture, located in the southwestern part of Fukui Prefecture, was formed in 2005 by the merger of Mikata Town, Mikata District, and Kaminaka Town, Onuki District. Wakasa Town, known as a "water town," boasts the majestic Sea of Japan; Lake Mikatago, registered under the Ramsar Convention for the conservation of internationally important wetlands at the center of Wakasa Bay Quasi-National Park; Tsumewari Falls, selected as one of Japan's 100 best waters; and Kitagawa River, a first-class river said to be the most beautiful in the Kinki region. Wakasa Town is famous for seafood and lake produce, including grouper and eel. Wakasa Town is also home to the nationally renowned Fukui plums, which are sold not only in popular pickled plums but also in more unusual products like plum wine and plum jam. At the Ume no Sato Kaikan in Naride, visitors can tour a plum processing plant and try their hand at making Japanese plum sweets.
