About Tomisato City
Tomisato City is located in the northern central part of Chiba Prefecture. The land was previously unsuitable for growing regular crops, but watermelon cultivation began in 1933 as a new way of utilizing the land. The city ranks second in Japan in terms of shipping volume. After being presented to the Imperial Family in 1936, watermelon became well-known nationwide and was established as a local specialty. Every June, a watermelon road race is held. In honor of watermelons, water stations distribute watermelons instead of water. A large watermelon-patterned gas holder was also built in 2000. It is the largest in Japan and has become a major symbol of Tomisato City. It is also the only city in Chiba Prefecture without a railway line.
