Nagareyama City has developed as a residential city in recent years, partly due to its easy access from central Tokyo. As a result, there are many residential areas within the city. The opening of the Tsukuba Express has further increased demand as a residential city. The city is also famous for its thriving mirin (sweet rice wine) production. Commerce is also thriving, with many commercial facilities being built. Famous places in Nagareyama include the Tone Canal, Issa Soju Memorial Museum, the remains of the Shinsengumi Nagareyama headquarters, and Suwa Shrine. Events include the Edogawa Fireworks Festival and the Citizens' Festival. In addition to Matsudo City, Kashiwa City, and Noda City, the city is also bordered by Misato City and Yoshikawa City in Saitama Prefecture. The city's flower is the azalea, and its tree is the boxwood.
