About Minamiboso City
Minamiboso City, located in southern Chiba Prefecture and adjacent to Tateyama City and Kamogawa City, is a local specialty. Its specialty is whale sauce, made by soaking beaked whale meat in a sauce and drying it in the sun. While the flavor is quite distinctive, it's often enjoyed as a side dish or snack with alcohol. Boso fans, one of Japan's three major types of fans, are also a local specialty. Made as a traditional craft, they feature round patterns made from female bamboo. Festivals include the Shiramatsu Omachi Festival, a nationally designated Important Intangible Cultural Property; the Kamo Sanbaso and Chikura Sanbaso, and the Awa and Watamachi festivals, all designated Intangible Folk Cultural Properties by Chiba Prefecture. The Wadaura Whale Dissection, held annually from June to August, is a spectacular event, with 26 beaked whales dissected.
